In 2015, E4 challenged the nation to showcase its creativity and ingenuity by entering the ‘E Sting’ competition. My entry for the competition was a project called Sweet Nectar, which proved to be both a challenging and rewarding experience that greatly contributed to my growth as a designer and animator.

Process

/ Scene 1 / The Journey

Sweet Nectar was an idea I first conceived during my Master’s degree in Animation. Although I wasn’t technically capable at the time, I envisioned a concept involving a hummingbird but struggled to develop a story to drive the animation. This time, I focused on a simple journey of a hummingbird searching for the perfect flower. To solidify the vision, I created a short storyboard to map out the animation. Given my limited practical experience with creating an animated short, I spent countless hours researching and gathering inspiration for both the hummingbird and the flower.

The flower’s design was inspired by a combination of a daisy and a hibiscus. To make it unique, I gave the inner structure the shape of a daisy, while the outer petals reflected the form of a hibiscus.

For the hummingbird, I opted for a simple cartoon design to keep the details minimal. Since this was my first time animating a bird, I wanted to avoid overcomplicating the design.

The opening scene featured the hummingbird searching for the perfect flower. After a brief search,
it finally spots the ideal bloom.

Process

/ Scene 2 / The Reward

The second scene features the hummingbird approaching the flower and extracting the nectar.

To mimic the natural movement of a hummingbird, I aimed to capture its typical quick and direct motions. However, since the animation leaned toward a cartoon style, I chose to embellish the movement by giving the hummingbird a more graceful, circular approach to the flower.

In this scene, the flower opens as a reward for the hummingbird’s patience. The flower’s animation involved the petals gracefully opening and the filaments extending outward, each tipped with the E4 logo. After tasting the sweet nectar, the hummingbird joyfully celebrates and begins zipping around, pollinating other flowers and spreading the E4 logo pollen.

Process

/ Scene 3 / Need for Speed

In the next scene, I wanted to exaggerate the hummingbird’s speed. I created a close-up shot that captured its rapid movement after collecting the nectar. Surprisingly, this was the easiest part to animate since the camera handled most of the motion, with E4 particles emitting from the bird as it zipped around. To further emphasize the hummingbird’s speed, I added white streaks in After Effects, enhancing the sense of motion and energy.

Process

/ Final Scene / The Reveal

In the final scene, the E4 logo is revealed to conclude the ident/sting. The hummingbird zips past in an aerial shot, showcasing several flowers with the logo displayed in the brand’s signature purple and white colors. The overall design aimed to keep the concept vibrant while staying true to the E4 brand, as seen in previous iterations of their animations.

Although I didn’t win, this was my first fully animated short, and I thoroughly enjoyed the process despite the challenges. I lacked a powerful computer to render the project efficiently, but I pushed through and managed to complete the short on time before the deadline.
